Demonstration ofRunway Status Lights at Logan Airport
نویسنده
چکیده
III Lincoln Laboratory has developed a prototype runway-status light system (RSLS), designed to prevent runway incursions and accidents. These status lights will tell aircraft pilots and surface-vehicle operators when runways are unsafe to enter or unsafe for departure. This status information will improve the situational awareness of pilots and vehicle operators, thereby reducing the number of runway incursions and accidents. The goal of the RSLS Logan Demonstration is to use automatic processing of surface primary and approach secondary radar data to drive simulated runway-status lights in a real-time but off-line surface-traffic automation system. This article presents a description of the design motivation, methodology, and implementation for the RSLS Logan Demonstration; it also provides an overview of the entire system on a functional block scale and gives introductory descriptions of the various subsystems.

Performance ofthe Runway-Status Light System at Logan Airport
.. Runway incursions are a persistent problem in airport ground-movement operations. Numerous critical conflicts and several fatal accidents have occurred as a result of unauthorized or otherwise inappropriate entry of aircra& or surface vehicles onto an active runway. Many of these conflicts developed quickly, leaving little time for effective intervention by either the controller or the pilot...
متن کاملA Multi-Modal Unscented Kalman Filter for Inference of Aircraft Position and Taxi Mode from Surface Surveillance Data
We describe a multi-modal unscented Kalman filter developed for estimation of aircraft position, velocity and heading from noisy surface surveillance data. The raw data is composed of tracks generated by the Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model-X at Boston Logan International Airport, and is obtained from the Runway Status Lights system. The multi-modal filter formulation facilitates esti...
متن کاملDemonstration of Reduced Airport Congestion through Pushback Rate Control
Airport surface congestion results in significant increases in taxi times, fuel burn and emissions at major airports. This paper describes the field tests of a congestion control strategy at Boston Logan International Airport. The approach determines a suggested rate to meter pushbacks from the gate, in order to prevent the airport surface from entering congested states and to reduce the time t...
متن کاملNetwork Congestion Control of Airport Surface Operations
This paper presents a novel approach to managing the aircraft taxi-out process at airports, by posing the problem in a network congestion control framework. A network model of the airport surface with stochastic link travel times is first developed. The model parameters for Boston Logan International Airport are estimated using empirical data from a surface surveillance system. Using the entry ...
